Wuthering Waves Beginner Guide (2026)
A complete Wuthering Waves starter guide for 2026: how the Convene pity system works, what to spend Asterites on, Echo farming, weapon banners, team-building fundamentals, and a 30-day new-player roadmap.

Getting started
Wuthering Waves is a free-to-play open-world action RPG by Kuro Games. You play as the Rover, an amnesiac protagonist who wakes in a post-cataclysm world and gradually uncovers its secrets. Combat is real-time and animation-cancel heavy: success comes from learning each Resonator's kit, chaining their intro and outro skills, and dodging at the right moment rather than mashing buttons.
This guide focuses on the decisions that matter in your first 20–40 hours — the window where new players either build a strong foundation or waste resources they cannot get back. If you have not read it yet, our best team comps guide shows the current meta lineups, and our redeem codes page lists free resources you should grab today.
Union Level and account progression
Union Level (UL) is your account-wide progression meter. It increases as you complete quests, explore, and clear content, and it gates several important systems:
- World Level scales enemy difficulty and reward quality.
- Daily and weekly tasks unlock and refresh, giving you a steady Asterite income.
- Feature access such as certain endgame modes and upgrade caps.
Early on, do not rush World Level higher than you can handle. A slightly lower world level means faster, safer farming, which is almost always better than struggling through overtuned content. Prioritize the main story until you have a few characters at a usable level, then circle back to exploration for chests, puzzles, and the bonus Asterites they grant.
The Convene (gacha) system in depth
The gacha is called Convene, and understanding pity is the single highest-leverage skill for a new player. Every limited character banner tracks two things: your progress toward a guaranteed 5★ and whether you are on a "captured" or "lost" 50/50.
- Hard pity: a 5★ is guaranteed by 80 convenes on a limited character banner.
- Soft pity: 5★ odds begin climbing around pull 74, making the final stretch far more likely to hit.
- 50/50: limited character banners are a coin flip between the featured unit and a standard one. Lose it, and your next 5★ is guaranteed to be the featured unit.
- Weapon banners use a different system with a higher floor but tighter rules; treat them as an endgame investment, not a starting one.
Use our Pull Calculator to estimate how many pulls a target needs, and the Pity Probability Calculator to see your odds at any given pity count.
Rule of thumb: spend Asterites on limited character Convenes first. Signature weapons can wait.
Spending Asterites wisely
Asterites are the premium currency and the resource you will regret wasting most. A sensible order:
- Limited character Convenes — highest account value, because a new unit opens new team options.
- Monthly / Battle Pass — a reliable, repeatable Asterite source if you play consistently.
- Standard Convene — only to fill roster gaps once your core team exists.
- Weapon banner — last, and only when a specific signature clearly upgrades a unit you main.
Resist the urge to "test luck" on banners you do not care about. A saved Convene is a future guaranteed 5★.
Echoes: your real power curve
If Convenes decide who you field, Echoes decide how strong they are. Echoes are equipable gear with main stats, sub-stats, and set bonuses. They matter more than most new players expect.
Early priorities:
- Farm one cost-efficient 2-piece + 2-piece set from a starter region rather than chasing a perfect 5-piece too early.
- Use the Echo XP converter to level useful echoes instead of hoarding low rolls.
- Do not over-invest in a set you will replace at higher levels; level to a functional point first.
- Pay attention to main stat per slot — a wrong main stat can waste an otherwise great echo.
As you progress, you will move from "anything with the right set" to "correct main stat, good sub rolls, and tuned cost distribution." That second stage is where most real account power comes from.
Weapons and the weapon banner
Weapons amplify a Resonator's damage but are rarely mandatory. Most teams function well with a strong 4★ or an alternative 5★ weapon, and signature weapons improve the ceiling rather than the viability. For a new account, the opportunity cost of pulling weapons instead of characters is high: a new character usually enables a whole new team, while a new weapon only upgrades one unit you already own. Save weapon pulls until your roster is stable and you know your long-term mains.
Team-building fundamentals
A basic team is Main DPS + Sub-DPS (outro buffer) + Support/Healer + Flex. The signature mechanic is Outro chaining: when a unit swaps out, its Outro skill buffs the unit coming in. Good teams are built around passing those buffs in the right order so your Main DPS enters with everything stacked.
Build one complete team to a high level before spreading resources. Half-built second and third teams slow progression more than they help. See our best team comps guide for concrete, current examples and rotation logic.
A daily and weekly routine
Efficiency beats grinding. A simple loop:
- Daily: claim commission tasks, spend Waveplate on echo/XP farming, do the quick login tasks.
- Weekly: clear the weekly bosses and any time-limited events for bonus materials and Asterites.
- Per patch: redeem every code from the redeem codes page and finish event quests before they expire.
Common beginner mistakes
- Pulling on impulse instead of saving for a planned limited unit.
- Leveling too many characters at once and finishing none.
- Ignoring Echo main stats and sub-rolls.
- Pushing World Level past what the account can clear comfortably.
- Skipping events — they are a major free-resource source.
A 30-day new-player roadmap
- Days 1–7: main story to unlock systems, build your first team, grab all active codes.
- Days 8–15: stabilize Echo farming, raise Union Level steadily, start a savings plan for your first target limited 5★.
- Days 16–30: finish a functional 2-piece + 2-piece echo set per core unit, learn one team's rotation, and only then consider the weapon banner for a unit you main.
FAQ
What is the pity system? Each banner tracks Convene count; a 5★ is guaranteed by 80 pulls, with soft pity from about pull 74 and a 50/50 that guarantees the featured unit on a loss.
Should I pull weapons or characters first? Characters, almost always. They unlock new team options; weapons only upgrade units you already own.
What should I spend Asterites on? Limited character Convenes first, then passes, then standard Convenes to fill gaps, and weapon banners last.
How important are Echoes? Very — they are the main gear system and drive most of your power. Farm efficient sets and use the Echo XP converter.
Is the game free-to-play friendly? Yes. Patient f2p players who plan Convenes and farm echoes can clear most endgame content.
